Power FM Spot For 17th Oct

On This Week In Technology

On this week in  2003 iTunes was released for Windows.

iTunes was downloaded more than 1,000,000 times in the first 3 days, selling more than 1,000,000 songs in that period.

iTunes has sold over 16 billion songs since its start

Discussion Points

How not to get a virus

  • Your first line of defence is keeping up to date with Windows updates , manually go in and check the optional / custom ones
  • Keep your software up to date - Adobe especially
  • Stop clicking links in emails from sources you have no relationship with
  • Have an antivirus solution which is there in the hope that if you haven't done the above it maybe able to save you

If you have an Android Smartphone do not click links in messages that you get as you could find your number and address book compromised.

Facebook Education

  • Get some education , look at your account settings and privacy settings
  • Friends are friends , public is public
  • Beware of apps , don't install every app and look at those apps and how they relate to you and your friends.
  • Learn how to block people

Next week my Windows 8 review

5AA Segment For 3rd July

On todays segment we discussed " Google"
Here are the key points:
  • We all use Google for search but remember it is an advertising company
  • Your search is designed for you , dependent on your viewing habits from Google
  • The ads that appear are based on your viewing and searching on Google
  • Google Chrome the internet browser is fast challenging as the most used internet browser and is a lot more user friendly to tech challenged people.
  • When in Google and your not sure what to type , ask a question “ How do I “ “Who is “
  • Use quotation marks in Google to refine your search “”
  • A Gmail account ( Google’s email solution ) can be your default email account and receive and send emails from your current email address
  • If you don’t have office software on your computer don’t worry , Google has a full office suite built in , they have a word processer , spreadsheet etc ( it’s free)
  • If you have never used Google maps to find an address you are missing out
  • Google own You Tube
  • Google have operating systems on phones , tablets and computers ( Android ) just like Microsoft and Apple

Online Storage & Sync Your Documents With Dropbox

I have always been a big user and advocate of Dropbox which allows you after installation to have 2GB free of storage on the Dropbox servers and if you refer another person then you get a bonus of 500MB for every person that installs Dropbox up to 16GB.

With Dropbox you have your files on your computer in your Dropbox folder and duplicated "in the cloud" on the Dropbox servers.

Change a file on your computer , in your Dropbox folder and it is changed and synced on the Dropbox servers.

You can install Dropbox on multiple computers and when you change a file on one it is changed on all your computers.

This " syncing " is done when the computers are connected to the internet.

The Dropbox folder can be stored anywhere on your computer but is normally placed in your My Documents folder.

Dropbox can be run on Windows , Apple , iPhones , iPads , Android

On portable devices you install the app then you have access to your files that you have in your Dropboxfolder.

I like Dropbox for it's ease of use and it's syncing capabilities.

Go to the Dropbox Site : Click Here

There are other FREE online storage options:

Adelaide Techguy On Power FM

Today is the anniversary of the release of the Game Boy Advance on this day in 2001.

Support and updates for Windows XP will finish on Apr 8th 2014.

This means businesses and home owners that still run Windows XP should start planning and budgeting for the changeover because no support or updates will mean you will undoubtedly become infected with whatever virus / malware is around then.

Microsoft Link

Microsoft's new operating system Windows 8 should be out in Oct this year and get ready because this is a different version of Windows than you have seen before, a tablet based operating system on a traditional computer.

Software Pick Of The Week

Remember The Milk

A task manager that you can use on your computer , (Windows or Apple) , smartphone or tablet , (Apple or Andriod)
