It’s The Tech Time Buying Time Of Year

buying computers and technology

Lots of tech and computer products are bought at this time of year.

Here is some advice with the new products you have.

  1. Read the instruction manual and I mean a decent read
  2. If it still is not working the way you think it should work refer to No 1 again
  3. When setting up tech products don't let people or the family hover over your shoulder , it will cause you to make a mistake , take your time
  4. The 30 day rule applies to tech and computers , if it is going to break down it will usually happen in the first 30 days and if it does, it is more than likely going to be a dud
  5. If you get stuck consult the biggest instruction manual , Google

Image Your Hard Drive

DriveImage xml

So you have reinstalled your operating system and done all the updates , installed your software and it is just the way you want it.

Why not remember this by " imaging" your hard drive now so that you have an exact duplicate of you hard drive so that if you run into problems and need to reinstall you can do so from your " image ".

This is not the same as backing up your documents but it is a way of getting your computer back to it's fresh install quickly.

This particularly useful if you pick up malware , virus infections and want to get your computer back to it's original state.

Software to do this  is  DriveImage XML Backup Software and it's free

However don't forget to read the instructions.

Move Mouse on Multiple Monitors

If you have multiple monitors you will want to move your mouse and desktop items across the screen diagonally from one monitor to the other in the direction that you choose.

So how do you do this.

Right click on your desktop and go to " personalize"

or go to Control Panel and open" Personalization"

Display 1

Click on Display

Display 2
Click Change display settings

Display 3
You will now see your 2 monitors labeled 1 & 2 .

To alter the position and the way you move items on your desktop just click on the monitor on the screen and drag to the other side of the monitor

  Display 4
You can now rearrange the monitors to accommodate the way you want to work on your screens.

When you have finished arranging the screens , just click apply.

Laptop Not Booting Have A Look At The Battery

Acer-aspire-laptop-battery So you have a laptop that is about 2 years old and suddenly it will not boot.
Batteries in laptops are designed for a maximum number of charges and if you were to charge your laptop every day for 2 years , the battery can die.
So to eliminate the battery as an excuse for the laptop not booting ,pull the battery out , plug the power cord in and try and turn on the computer.
If the computer turns on then get yourself a new battery if not then it is probably not the battery and it is time to look elsewhere for a problem.

Data Recovery , Ubuntu and The Blue Screen Of Death

Ubuntu

I was asked the other day to recover data from a computer that had the dreaded " Blue Screen Of Death ".

Now the first thing was trying to get past the "BSOD" by booting into safe mode and then trying the various options , last known good configuration etc.

None of this worked.

This is when I booted from my Ubuntu disc.

Ubuntu is a Linux operating system that you can download for free and make an ISO CD IMAGE

Ubuntu will give you the option of having a look without altering your current Windows installation and that is the option you want , not the install option which will wipe your hard drive.

Let the installation run and in a few minutes it will look like a new desktop but you should have access to your files.you will see the hard drive symbol appear on the left hand side of the screen.

You can then back them up to a portable hard drive , flash drive etc.

There is also an option to repair the disc which I did and then reboot the system to see if Windows will run.

In this case it did and once again emphasizes the need to back up on a regular basis.

Wise Words On Computers & Software

I was listening to a podcast ( Macbreak Weekly ) and Merlin Mann , writer , speaker & broadcaster made the following statement on computers and software.

"Software is just software , it's not magic

Software is telling a machine how to do something & machines are not smart.

People are kind of smart , but the machine is always right , and it's we that are wrong and the programs we make are imperfect and things change.

Nobody is completely current or completely safe."
