Curved TVs – Are They A Marketing Gimmick ?
Samsung and LG had new TVs at the recent Consumer & Electronics Show which have curved screens.
These screens, it’s claimed, “wrap around you” and “provide a uniquely immersive viewing experience”.
The reality is that the curved shape comes with some drawbacks and very little benefit to the viewer.
So whats wrong with a curved display ?
Curved displays maybe difficult to mount on a wall instead relying on a stand or table top which has issues , especially with younger children.
Then there is the viewing angle where although the curve of the displays is relatively small, the edges of the display reduce the viewing angles, blocking the view of people sitting to the right and left-hand side of the screen. These are designed to sit right in front of the screen and in the middle ( great if you are the only one watching it ).
Bending outwards from the flat screen, the edges of the television are also distracting if you aren’t sitting directly in front of the display, with the back of the television and its side edge clearly visible. This disrupts the “immersive experience” that curved television manufacturers tout as the biggest advantage of the bowed shape.
Also the price of these displays will come down as well, along with the new Ultra Hi-Def Televisions which in reality have little media that can be played on them currently.
Germ Fighting Gorilla Glass Is Coming
Corning’s Gorilla Glass is strong, thin, and light, which is why Apple and Samsung use it for the smartphone screens on the iPhone and Galaxy S4.
However glass on smartphones is not the cleanest of surfaces.
Smartphone screens are germ-ridden objects due to what we touch throughout the day and then we use our touchscreens on our smartphones.
Corning used the 2014 International CES to show off a new version of Gorilla Glass that repels the microbes that cover every surface.
The new antimicrobial Gorilla Glass bakes in ionic silver, a naturally antimicrobial agent, to keep your smartphones as germ-free as they can be.
The first product to hit the market is Steelcase’s room-scheduling tablet for businesses, and Corning expects the material to be a hit where cleanliness is important—for instance, hospitals.
The company said the antimicrobial nature of the new product will last the entire lifecycle of a smartphone, so no replacements are necessary.
It will be interesting to see which smartphone maker will be the first to use it
