“The recent bushfires in the state’s mid north are a reminder of the need to take weather warnings seriously and put a plan in place now in order to stay connected,” said John Tonkin, Area General Manager for Northern SA.
“Even if you don’t live in an area that’s at risk, there’s a chance you maybe holidaying or driving when an event occurs and it is better to be prepared than sorry.”
Seven tips for staying connected
Keep near a fixed line telephone
If the electricity supplies to an area are cut, mobile services may be affected. A standard fixed line phone may be more likely to continue to operate in situations of power outage. For NBN customers, it’s important to remember that your home phone works through a modem and if there’s a power outage, your phone line will also be down.
Mobile phones
Always carry an alternate way to charge your phone in case you lose mains power. An in-car charger, solar power chargers and power bank chargers are all good options. If you are evacuating your home, make sure you take your mobile phone charger with you.
Keep essential numbers close
Have a list of essential contact numbers close at hand, including local Police, Fire and the SES. Only call Triple Zero when a situation is threatening life or property, or if it’s time critical.
Keep calls to a minimum
To minimise call congestion on the network, it’s best to keep calls to a minimum during natural disasters to allow people to call emergency service organisations.
Back up your data
Make a copy of important data, photos and contact information and keep safely away from your home. In times of a disaster you don’t want to the extra stress of worrying about this information.
Report an issue when it occurs
If you have an issue with your service, make sure you report it. Telstra customers can report a fault by calling
13 22 00. All non-Telstra customers should contact their service provider to log a fault.
Have a battery powered radio
Have a battery powered radio with spare battery to listen to the emergency broadcaster.
