What Is Malvertising ?

Love this graphic that explains Malvertising from Malwarebytes

So what is Malvertising ?

Stands for Malicious advertising that infects your computer with malware and in many cases popup ads that will not go away.

So how do you get it .You visit a website – the threats lie in the ads and these ads ( selected ones ) are designed to infect peoples computers

So how do you protect yourself – your computer from Malvertising.

An Adblocker combined with an effective antivirus solution will help combat this currently.

Ransomware – Cryptolocker – It Is Getting Worse

Ransomware is easy to understand but hard to beat. It infects the machine, encrypts all files and then demands payment to get the files back. Ransomware works so well that most variants will even remove themselves when the damage is done, knowing you have the choice of either paying the ransomware author to get your files back, or risk losing them forever.

Try and also have a backup that is done on a regular basis but is not connected to the computer on a permanent basis.

If you fall victim you will have lost access to everything – its encrypted and you will need the key to unencrypt it ( that’s why you pay the ransom ) – if you do decide to pay you probably will not get the key.

It will not go away – people sometimes think it will

Your antivirus will not help you

Take a good look at emails you are opening – Zip files ( don’t open them ), invoices , need you to check details, parcel deliveries – when it doubt and you should doubt – don’t open them.

If you are receiving multitudes of these emails consider moving to Gmail or Outlook.com ( the online version) – they will in most cases flag and remove.

There are also reports that infected webpages can infect your computer:

A Popular Toymakers Website Is Giving Visitors Ransomware

This site was exploiting outdated Java , Flash Player or Silverlight Plug Ins

Can you stop it running ?

Try CryptoPrevent  and or Malwarebytes Prevention but there is no longterm guarantee these will continue working as the Crypto variants are continually evolving.

It is your actions that count :

No , you have visited a site that is having security issues as websites can become infected and then when you visit the site it tries to install on your computer

On a Windows computer these infections may spread but on an Apple computer they will only infect your browser

Some of these will also ask you to call a number – do not do that

If you do call the number , they will try and get you to let them log onto your computer , then charge you as well as installing all sorts of other programs in the background

So if you are on an Apple computer and this happens , what should you do ?

Also be aware that when you browse with Google Chrome you may see the following now.

Computer Security, Software, Tech Advice

What You Can Do If Infected By Malware / Virus

How do you know if your computer has been infected with virus / malware ?

  • The computer has become slower.
  • Boot time dramatically increases.
  • Your home page has changed.
  • Toolbars appear that you didn’t download.
  • Windows Update stops working
  • New Items suddenly appear in your favorites
  • Your search engine changes

So where to from here.

Firstly if using Windows XP , Vista or Windows 7 scan your computer with Microsoft Security Essentials or your antivirus software you have installed.
If it has been disabled , which can happen when you have been infected ,try and start it & scan your system.

You could also try and run the Microsoft Malicious Software remover but the effective use of this will be on how long Windows Update has been stopped from working.

How To Run The Malicious Software Removal Tool

If it will not activate or run then you are definitely infected.

So what to do now?

You could try and install Malware Antibytes run it in safe mode, update it and do a full system scan.

Action what it finds.

So you have done all the above and done a full system scan with your anti-virus program and your computer is still not behaving properly.

REMEMBER there is no guarantee when removing malware or virus’s that you will be able to remove all traces.

This leads to the final solution , format and reinstall your operating system.

This is the only guarantee that you have that all traces will be removed.

When reinstalling install Microsoft Security Essentials

What About My Documents?

All being well you should be able to get your documents off your hard drive but really you should have been backing up.
