The End Of Windows XP – It’s Time To Go – One Month To Go

I get this question every week via email or radio , to talk about the end of Windows XP and why should users be concerned.

All operating systems come to an end eventually. 

• Windows 95
• Windows 98
• Windows ME

Now it is Windows XP turn.

Windows XP as an operating system will receive no security updates from Microsoft from April 8th 2014.

So what does that mean for you ? 

By your continued use of Windows XP after April 8th on the internet , this will open you up to being infected with malware / virus infections as virus malware infections access vulnerabilities in the operating system ( Windows XP ) and as there will be no more patches you will undoubtedly become infected very quickly.

Your antivirus will only do so much but as most cannot prevent you now from getting infected they will eventually do little to help you.

Software makers are also now not supporting Windows XP  so the thought of installing anything modern in software will come to an end. For example Office 2013 , iTunes.

So what are your options ? 

Keep using Windows XP after April 2014 and go on the internet and you will be in a world of hurt.

Keep using Windows XP and stay off the internet if you have software that you use that only runs on Windows XP , no internet and you can keep using it

See if your computer will run Windows 7 or 8 by using the upgrade advisor – read what it tells you as many older computers will not be able to run Windows 7 , 8

Buy a new computer.

Install an open source operating system on your computer , this however will require you to learn a lot of new skills and will mean backing up and reloading your documents , photos etc and software that you have now will not run in most cases. 

Microsoft have provided a software tool on Windows XP.com to transfer all your files and settings to a new computer.
