You Can Change Your Gmail Email User Name Now

For more than 20 years, if you picked a Gmail address you later regretted, you were stuck with it. Whether it was something you created as a teenager or just an address that no longer sounded professional, the only real option was to create a completely new account and start again.

That's finally changing.

Google has begun rolling out the ability to change your Gmail address without losing your existing account. That means you keep all your emails, Google Drive files, Photos, Calendar entries and YouTube subscriptions, but you can choose a new Gmail address if it's available. Even better, your old Gmail address becomes an alias, so emails sent to the old address will still arrive in your inbox.

There are a few catches. The feature is still rolling out, so not everyone will see it yet. You can only change your address once every 12 months, and Google limits how many times you can make the change.

If you've been embarrassed by an email like footyfan99, partyanimal2004 or something even worse, your time may finally have arrived.

To see if you've got the feature, go to Manage your Google Account, then Personal Info, then Email. If you see Change Google Account email, you're one of the lucky ones. If not, you'll just need to wait a little longer while Google continues the rollout.
